Wissenschaft gegen Faschismus: "Who's Afraid of Gender? Gender and Queer Studies Against Fascism"
"Gender-Gaga," "gender ideology," or "l'idéologie du genre," these are terms used to describe and discredit the academic fields of Gender and Queer Studies and the larger movements for a more gender-sensitive and just society. As scholars like Agnieszka Graff and Elżbieta Korolczuk (Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment, 2022) or Judith Butler (Who's Afraid of Gender, 2024) have shown, conservative and right-wing groups attacking these disciplines in the US, South America, and Europe are well-networked and strategically share and adapt strategies and talking points. This workshop will feature input talks criticising the ongoing attacks on Gender and Queer Studies in the U.S. and tactics used by the German anti-Gender movement. In addition, we will show how anti-discriminatory language can be an important tool for social justice. Then, we will use the World Café method to think about strategies to counteract attacks on these disciplines and on academia more generally.
